Mathletics 2017 participants cheered at the conclusion of the competition on March 25, 2017 held in Conestoga College of Engineering.

The PEO Grand River Chapter organized this year's Mathletics competition to promote the importance of mathematics and engineering amongst Elementary School students in the Kitchener-Waterloo region.  Questions were focused on the relevance of engineering in practical life designed to enrich the knowledge of the young minds.  It is an exciting time-bound competition composed of two rounds, an easy and a difficult round, for both the juniors (grades 5 & 6) and seniors (grades 7 & 8).

The popular event was held at the Engineering Building of Conestoga College with the participation of 70 students from different Kitchener-Waterloo elementary schools.  Saturday, March 25th was a rainy spring morning, but the atmosphere inside the lecture hall was energetically hot and filled with excitement.

The competition started at 8:30 am and ended at 12:00 pm. Junior category winners were  Abdulrahman Elswefy, in first place, Quinn Tasch in second place and Dana Yuan in third place. Senior category winners were Andy Dong, Nate MacLeod,  and Kaitlyn Pereira, in first, second and third place respectively.  Scores can be found here.

The event was organized by PEO Grand River chapter volunteers and engineering students from Conestoga College. The Dean of the College of Engineering, Julia Biedermann, graced the event with her welcoming remarks. Dean Julia Biedermann, Ph.D., P.Eng. also offers a congratulatory message to the winners and all the Mathletics competitors (PDF).

The search for the next Mathletics champion continuous, and the organizers encourage fellow engineers to help support and promote the competition to families and friends. If you are interested in volunteering and helping to promote the engineering profession to young people, please contact the education committee chair at
